One of the few brands
in the world that creates
bespoke and
made to order
spectacles and sunglasses
Family Affair is a Lisbon-based luxury eyewear brand owned by the passionate Nunes Leal family, who, after years of curating, representing, and distributing the world’s finest eyewear brands, decided to set themselves apart by creating a truly unique eyewear concept.
They established themselves as one of the few brands in the world which creates bespoke and made-to-order spectacles and sunglasses.
Their creations are totally handmade and controlled by the family craftsmen who have years of research and dedication to classic artisanal techniques, and all the made-to-order line models are truly unique due to the handcrafted type of production.
They aim not to make eyewear but rather facial sculptures to better explain their craft, commitment, and passion.
The Family Affair logo is based on the Nunes Leal family shield, represented by the loyal guard dogs, as well as the seven stars that symbolise the six family members, with the seventh representing the client, the wearer, and the new family member.
There is also the house collection, composed of shapes that have left a lasting impression on the family and are part of the brand’s design heritage and history. These pieces are produced in micro-series, aligning with the brand’s philosophy of individuality and exclusive objects of desire.
The use of the world’s finest raw materials is mandatory, which is why they source the best cotton acetates, sustainable and animal-friendly Asian Water Buffalo Horns, and precious woods, not to mention the very rare and limited vintage acetate slabs sourced from old factories around the world.
When it comes to hardware, the story is no different. From the three-barrel hinges to rivets, screws, and core wires, everything was designed from scratch. The materials used, along with the extra metal thickness for maximum style and performance, give all Family Affair creations an unmistakable look that you won’t find anywhere else.
The frames are dreamed, designed, and produced in the brand’s workshop in the beautiful city of Lisbon, where the family’s remarkable atelier showcases the machinery and tools used to create each frame.
It takes 60 different steps to create a Family Affair frame, and more than a year if you include the time needed for the cotton acetate to dry and mature.
Once this process is complete, the family craftsmen, guided by the client’s desires, laminate and fuse different slabs to create unique colour combinations. These are then hand-cut and filled, a process that can take up to three weeks.
The frames and temples undergo additional treatments, including tumbling and hand polishing, along with secret techniques developed by the skilled family artisans.
While there are many steps from start to finish, one thing remains constant throughout the entire process — love, passion, and respect for the craft.
